About Eli

Eli Matthewson is one of New Zealand’s sharpest comedic voices — a stand-up, writer, presenter and satirist who blends personal vulnerability, queer identity, and incisive wit into shows that are both deeply telling and wildly funny. Based in Auckland and raised in Christchurch, Eli’s work has taken him around the country and beyond, including sell‑out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe.

He’s won the prestigious Fred Award in 2021 for his standout show Daddy‑Short Legs, been nominated for multiple Billy T Awards, and has featured regularly on major NZ comedy and TV shows, such as 7 Days, Funny Girls, Jono and Ben, and Paddy Gower Has Issues.

Offstage, Eli co‑hosts the podcast The Male Gayz with comedian Chris Parker, writes extensively for television and was part of the first same‑sex couple ever featured on Dancing With the Stars NZ.
